Judy Bobbett shares her journey as a STEM student and International Boxer
Judy Bobbett shared her experience of balancing elite sport with university life at a recent Fireside Chat hosted by Fidelity Investments Ireland.
As an Irish international boxer and current DCU Sport Scholar, Bobbett is completing a Master's in Elite Sport Performance while continuing to represent Ireland on the international stage. Speaking on the panel, she discussed the realities of combining high-performance sport with postgraduate study and the commitment needed to succeed in both.
Drawing on her own experiences, Bobbett spoke about managing training, competition and academic deadlines, highlighting the importance of time management, resilience and having a strong support network. She also spoke about the role the DCU Sport Scholarship programme that Fidelity Investments Ireland contributes to, having played in allowing her to pursue her sporting ambitions while continuing her studies.
The discussion also focused on encouraging more women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Bobbett spoke about her own experience as a female STEM scholar and admitted she never expected to follow that path, encouraging other young women to keep an open mind and explore opportunities they may not have previously considered.
Fidelity Investments Ireland works with Dublin City University to support women studying STEM through its Women in STEM Scholarship programme. The sponsorship provides scholarship funding across the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, DCU Access and DCU Sport, helping students pursue their academic goals while also supporting those competing at the highest levels of sport.
Bobbett's contribution highlighted how the skills developed through elite sport, including resilience, discipline and adaptability, can transfer directly into academic and professional life. Her appearance also reflected the shared commitment of DCU and Fidelity Investments Ireland to supporting students who are striving to succeed both in their studies and in high-performance sport.g
