Decarbonization, Trade, and Competitiveness in Troubled Times
A roundtable discussion on Decarbonization, Trade, and Competitiveness in Troubled Times was held by the Dublin European Law Institute (DELI) on Monday 23 March at Europe House, in partnership with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland.
The event was opened by Jack Moloney, (Press Officer at European Parliament) and Dr. Padraig Murphy, (Associate Dean for External Engagement, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DCU). Chaired by Jennifer Duggan, Dublin Bureau Chief at Bloomberg, the roundtable featured Devin McDaniels (Counsellor of Trade & Environment, WTO), Prof. Simone Borghesi (Director of the Florence School of Regulation – Climate, EUI, and Vice Rector, University of Siena), Dr Vincent Power (Partner, A&L Goodbody), and Dr Goran Dominioni (Assistant Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, DCU).
The discussion examined how the European Union can reconcile climate ambition with competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain global environment, with speakers reflecting on the impact of geopolitical conflict, trade fragmentation, pressure on multilateralism, and the challenges these developments pose for decarbonization.
Speaking at the event Dr Goran Dominioni said:
"In these challenging times, it is crucial that the EU does not withdraw from climate action and instead strengthens key decarbonization policies, including the EU ETS, which has delivered significant emissions reductions while also generating substantial revenue."
