What are Alternative Formats (AF) ?

DCU students who are blind or have a visual impairment may require alternative access to printed materials may receive their textbooks in an alternative format.

Books, journal articles or lecture notes can be converted into alternative formats,  such as:

  • Audio Files
  • Braille
  • E Books
  • Scanning Materials

How can students access alternative formats?

Firstly a student must register with the DLSS and they then can be referred to the Assistive technology officer for an assessment.

The AT Officer is based in the Information Systems & Services department (ISS) and will meet with the student to carry out a needs assessment.

As creating alternative formats take time, all the core textbook information must be given by the student to the DLSS as early in the academic year as possible.
