Introducing DCU Secure Access

Replacing Legacy VPN with DCU Secure Access

Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) is deploying DCU Secure Access across Dublin City University (DCU) managed devices to replace the legacy VPN. Tailored for a flexible and efficient hybrid working environment, DCU Secure Access offers a more reliable way to connect to systems like Agresso. It manages your security silently, maintaining a stable and uninterrupted connection to University services without the need for manual reconnections.

Why we are introducing DCU Secure Access

This transition supports the DCU strategic pillar to Optimise Organisational Resilience and Readiness by improving three core areas:

  • Reliability: More stable, consistent access to protected systems.
  • Security: Zero Trust controls provide application specific access and limit exposure of sensitive DCU data.
  • Experience: Fewer repeated logins and less manual connection management for approved staff on trusted devices.
Deployment, support and actions

DTS will push DCU Secure Access in phases to ensure stability; the existing VPN will run in parallel until decommissioning is confirmed.  Staff actively using legacy VPN (FortiClient) should expect to be using DCU Secure Access by 18th March 2026.

"The transition to DCU Secure Access is an important milestone in the DTS mission to empower students and staff through modern digital solutions. By removing legacy technology barriers, this new solution makes secure access simpler and more seamless for staff in their day-to-day work. At the same time, it further strengthens the University’s security posture and supports more efficient working and collaboration, regardless of location."

Justin Doyle, Director of Digital Technology Solutions

What to expect
  • Non‑VPN users: No change to device behaviour or connectivity.
  • Current VPN users: A one‑time pop‑up will prompt sign‑in with DCU credentials; after initial authentication, DCU Secure Access manages secure connections silently.
  • Managed devices only: DCU Secure Access is deployed to university‑managed endpoints; personal or unmanaged devices are not part of the automated rollout.

For systems such as Agresso, the goal is to make secure access feel the same as standard DCU services while also adding stronger protections.
