The Faculty of Engineering and Computing's Research Day is a vibrant display of the ground-breaking knowledge being generated by our academics, postdocs, and postgraduate students. Inspired by this year’s theme, “Sense and Sustainability,” we will be showcasing our research in the context of the world's most pressing climate, energy, and digital technology challenges. This is an opportunity to connect with leading academics, hear from inspiring guest speakers, and discover the innovative solutions driving us toward a better, more sustainable future.

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing's Research Day will take place on the third floor of the Polaris Building on the DCU Glasnevin Campus, Collins Avenue Extension, Dublin D09 V209. Parking is available to visitors directly beside the Polaris building.

Suzanne Little
Suzanne Little is professor in the School of Computing at Dublin City University and an SFI Principal Investigator at the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics working in the area of media analytics, information access and retrieval across a variety of application domains. She completed her PhD at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2006 examining and developing tools for analysing and managing scientific multimedia data. She has worked on a number of EU projects in the areas of multimedia, technology enhanced education, security, autonomous vehicles and big data. Prof. Little is co-director of the SFI Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence (CRT-AI) and a Funded Investigator in the iForm Advanced Manufacturing Centre. Her expertise is in video analysis, semantic search and data integration and current research includes projects examining bias in deep learning models for computer vision, safety in micromobility and personal transportation, improved medical image analysis, biomedical data and water desalination.
Dave Robbins
Dave Robbins is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communications at Dublin City University (DCU) and Co-Director of the DCU Centre for Climate and Society, where he works to bring vital social science and humanities perspectives to the climate conversation.
Before stepping into academia, Dave spent years at the heart of Irish media. As a veteran journalist, editor, broadcaster, and columnist, his work has appeared across major national outlets including the Irish Independent, The Irish Times, Cara magazine, and the Evening Herald. Beyond the newsroom, he has also applied his expertise to public policy, having served as a strategic advisor to the Minister for the Environment and continuing his active involvement in local politics and non-profit consulting.
Dave holds a research Master’s and a PhD from DCU. His doctoral study on Irish media coverage of climate change was published as a book by Routledge, fueling his ongoing research into how media frames environmental issues, how journalism practice is evolving, and how social media and mobile journalism shape public debate.
Trish Morgan, assistant professor in the School of Communications
Dr. Trish Morgan brings a dynamic, forward-thinking perspective to the intersection of environmental crisis and public engagement. An Assistant Professor in Dublin City University’s School of Communications, her work tackles a vital question: how do we effectively translate complex ecological issues into urgent societal action?
Dr. Morgan bridges human geography and political ecology to examine environmental crises through the lens of planetary boundaries, using an innovative mix of rigorous academic research and multi-sensory storytelling. Believing that impactful communication goes beyond text, she leverages sound, photography, video, and augmented reality—featured in creative works like her 12-track ecological sound project, The Miracle of the One Thing.
Her pioneering approach is backed by major research initiatives. As Principal Investigator for the Research Ireland project SEED: Sensory Experiences of Environmental Data, she explores communicating climate data through all five senses. She also co-leads the Climate Talk initiative and has spearheaded multiple Environmental Protection Agency projects on how digital media shifts social norms around consumption.

Following a community vote, the Faculty of Engineering and Computing competitors will advocate in a live showdown for a technology, policy, or idea that addresses one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The solution can be global or local, high-tech or simple, decades away or ready to deploy tomorrow - anything from a blue-sky concept to a simple morning fix - the battle is convincing the audience to believe your pitch.
