Why Ireland?
I chose Ireland because of its strong reputation in biomedical research, innovation, and the close collaboration between academia and industry. DCU’s MSc in Diagnostic and Precision Medicine offered a unique combination of advanced molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, which aligned perfectly with my career aspirations. Ireland also provides excellent opportunities for international students to gain research experience and build careers in life sciences. The welcoming and multicultural environment further encouraged me to pursue my postgraduate studies there.
What Master’s degree did you study and why was DCU the right fit for your career goals?
I completed an MSc in Diagnostic and Precision Medicine at Dublin City University. I selected DCU because of its research-focused curriculum, modern laboratory facilities, and strong emphasis on translational medicine. The programme provided both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills that prepared me for a career in biomedical research. It allowed me to develop expertise in precision medicine, molecular diagnostics, and computational biology, which are highly relevant to my current research career.
Favourite course elements
My favourite part of the programme was the research project, as it allowed me to apply my knowledge to real scientific questions while developing laboratory and data analysis skills. The guidance and mentorship from academic staff helped me become a more confident and independent researcher. I particularly enjoyed modules related to genomics, molecular diagnostics, and bioinformatics, which strengthened my interest in precision medicine and computational approaches in biomedical research.
Standing out in the job market
The programme equipped me with a combination of laboratory and computational skills that are highly valued in biomedical research. Through my research project and coursework, I developed expertise in molecular biology techniques, experimental design, data interpretation, and scientific communication. These skills helped me secure research opportunities and made me a competitive candidate for positions in academic research and biotechnology.
Career path and current role?
After graduating from DCU, I joined Queen’s University Belfast as an MSCA Fellow, where I worked on extracellular vesicle research in cancer diagnostics. This experience expanded my expertise in translational cancer research and advanced molecular techniques. I am currently employed as a Research Assistant in the School of Biotechnology at Dublin City University, where I continue to work on research projects in biotechnology and precision medicine.
My career has progressed through continuous learning, international collaborations, and multidisciplinary research experiences. The foundation I gained at DCU played an important role in helping me develop as a researcher and pursue opportunities with real clinical and scientific impact.
Campus life and resources
DCU offers an excellent learning environment with outstanding laboratory facilities, library resources, career services, and academic support. The multicultural campus made it easy to connect with students from different backgrounds and build a strong academic network.
During my Master’s, I had the opportunity to work as a Postgraduate Student Ambassador at DCU, which allowed me to engage with prospective students, represent the university, and develop my communication and leadership skills. I also appreciated the opportunities to participate in seminars, networking events, and activities that connected students with researchers and industry professionals.
Highlight at DCU
The highlight of my time at DCU was successfully completing my research project and graduating with strong academic performance. Another memorable experience was serving as a Postgraduate Student Ambassador, where I was able to contribute to the DCU community and support prospective students while developing valuable professional skills.
More importantly, the knowledge, research experience, and confidence I gained at DCU helped me secure international research positions. Looking back, studying at DCU was a major stepping stone that shaped my research career and ultimately led to my current role as a Research Assistant at DCU.
Advice for international students who want to study at DCU and work in Ireland
My advice is to be proactive from your first day. Take advantage of every opportunity to build research experience, develop practical skills, and connect with lecturers, researchers, and fellow students. Getting involved in university activities, such as student ambassador roles or networking events, can also help you develop confidence and professional skills.
