Money Matters for International research students
Money Matters
DCU is required to make payments to research students and visitors solely through Irish bank accounts. Students may incur significant bank charges when accessing money from international accounts. To this end, it is advisable that you set up an Irish bank account immediately on arrival.
How to set up an Irish bank account on DCU campus
The current campus bank (Bank Of Ireland) has agreed the following process to set up a bank account:
Complete the form supplied by Bank Of Ireland:
- Students/visitors will require a Proof Of Address letter which has been produced and signed by the host school or faculty.
- Students should bring along their student ID card in order to avail of student banking.
- Photographic ID such as a passport or a national identity card.
The student/visitor should then visit the bank with the documentation (preferably in the morning).
The minimum amount of time required to open a bank account (when all paperwork is in order) is two working days and generally all accounts can be set up within five working days.
Proof of Address
The bank are required to obtain proof of customer address in order to comply with money laundering legislation. A utility bill with the student/visitor's name and address, or a landlord's lease agreement will suffice as proof of address. Alternatively DCU can provide the student with a proof of address letter by completing the following two steps:
- The host must supply the student or visitor with a proof of address form to complete. This form has to be signed by the landlord or letting agency.
- The host can then issue the proof of address letter. This letter should be sent to the student or visitor address which may take up to two days. The bank will require the letter to be dated a minimum of two days prior to processing the bank account application.
Transferring Money
Once the Irish bank account has been set-up, you should be able to transfer your funds from your home account. The transfer process can take 2-3 working days. Students requiring evidence of funds for immigration purposes can obtain a letter from the bank which states the level of funds in the account within 3-4 working days. You must request this letter in the bank branch, or online. It will be posted to your home address.
PPS Number
A PPS number is required by all International students receiving scholarship payments. Students need to attend the Intreo Centre located on Parnell Street with the following documentation:
- Valid passport or national identity card
- Second form of photographic ID such as drivers licence
- Proof of address in Ireland
The number will be posted to the students address within 3-5 working days. Further Information on the application process can be found on the social welfare web pages.
