Pregnancy / Crisis unplanned

Whether a pregnancy is planned or unplanned it can still come as a shock. If you think you may be pregnant, it needs to be confirmed if you are or not. It is best to wait 4 days from when your period is overdue (or 32 days after the first day of your last period)

A reliable home pregnancy test kit can be bought from any pharmacy. You can attend your GP, Student Health Centre or Family Planning organisations. Some agencies offer free testing with medical cards.

Important points

  • A positive pregnancy result can cause conflicting thoughts and emotions.
  • Some women know quite quickly what to do, others are not so sure.
  • Remember no one ought to push you to make a particular decision.
  • Either way, support and help is readily available if you want it- non-judgemental / non-directive via the following agencies:

DCU Student Health Centre Family Planning,
Women's medical centres
DCU Student Counselling Service.

Conclusion

Becoming a parent is a major life change for both partners in the relationship. Information, counselling, and emotional support is available equally to both persons. Further resources are available with managing your finances, accommodation, study, work relationships and coping with the sacrifices every parent has to make. You should know your entitlements and help available to you for Antenatal care. Your GP or Student Health Centre can direct you on Antenatal care during your pregnancy.
