BOOK LAUNCH FOR VOLUME EDITED BY PATRICK WADDEN
On Thursday 12 th of March, the Celtic Studies Association of North America celebrated the publication of An Eoraip: Gaelic Ireland in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, edited by Brendan Kane (University of Connecticut) and our own Patrick Wadden. The launch was moderated by Professor Catherine McKenna (Harvard), and featured reflections on the volume by Professor John McCafferty (UCD) and Professor Máire Ní Mhaonaigh (Cambridge).
A large crowd on Zoom heard the respondents discuss what they identified as the volume’s key themes and interventions. Chief among these was how integral Gaelic Ireland was to Europe over the course of the long chronological span covered by the volume. The participation of Gaelic Ireland in European economic, political, and social networks influenced the lived experiences of its inhabitants. At the same time, continuous dialogue in both directions between centres of learning in Ireland and on the continent shaped Gaelic learned culture. In light of these connections, it is hardly surprising that Gaelic scholars thought of themselves as belonging to a broader, supranational community. They thought of themselves as both Irish and European.
