82-year-old achieves lifelong goal with Honours Degree from DCU

Pensioner started English and History course to help him cope with the loss of his wife

James O’Reilly is living proof that it’s never too late to return to education.

The 82-year-old Dubliner recently graduated from Dublin City University (DCU) with a BA in English and History, making him one of the oldest students to receive a degree from the University.

As he prepared to enter DCU’s Autumn graduation ceremony in the Helix, James admitted he was feeling nervous. “You know, I’m old enough to have more sense!”

James’ motivation for embarking on a University degree late in life is deeply personal. “My wife passed away seven years ago, and I went into depression,” he explains.

His sons were understandably concerned and suggested applying for a course. “The lads persuaded me to do something that would interest me, to occupy my time.”

Earlier in life, he earned a Master’s in Information Studies. However, he had long dreamed of studying humanities subjects and is proud of achieving a 2.1 in English and History.

“Well, it means a lot because I was always interested in both literature and history.”

As for his next steps, James is taking his time. He jokes that he’s “certainly not going to have a career” in academia, but DCU staff seem to think he has potential.

“Well, some of my tutors want me to go for a PhD, but I’m taking a year out to decide,” says James.
