School of Communications graduate appointed new RTÉ News2day presenter
Recent graduate of the School of Communications, Cathal Dowd, has been selected as the new presenter of RTE’s news2day programme. The first-time presenter is working alongside DCU Media and Politics alumna, Florence Okojie, to bring national and international news stories to children all over Ireland.
Cathal began his position on the children’s news show earlier this week, where he shared all the latest stories in the run up to the new school term.
Prior to his appointment at RTE, Cathal completed the BA in Journalism programme at DCU, where he spent his spare time working in a number of roles across the media industry. These included reporting for WLR FM and Balls.ie and commentating on League of Ireland matches with Wexford FC.
Cathal was selected for the news2day position following a call-out to media and journalism graduates across Ireland and an extensive audition process.
Speaking to RTE on his new position, Cathal said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the news2day team. It’s such an exciting and surreal opportunity to be able to be part of a show that I watched growing up. To now be in the place of people who shaped my early love for news and media is an absolute honour.”
He added: “It’s going to be a fantastic experience to be part of this wonderful team and to help bring news and current affairs to screens and classrooms across the country, keeping them up to date with all that’s happening in the world. Most of all, I’m really looking forward to meeting people, from schools and elsewhere, all over the nation and sharing their stories with the children of Ireland.”
News2day is available on the RTE Player and from Monday to Friday at 4:20pm on RTE2 and the RTE News Channel.
