Academic biography

I am the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU). Prior to this appointment, I served as Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and as Chair of DCU’s Open Research Steering Group. Over the past decade, I have held several leadership roles within the School of Law and Government and have played a significant role in consolidating and expanding DCU’s teaching and research in international relations, peace and conflict studies, and diplomacy.

I am a leading international scholar and have widely published on statehood and state recognition, and post-conflict peacebuilding and statebuilding. Among my published works are: Counter-Peace (2026); Sub-State Recognition (2025); The Derecognition of States (2024); The Oxford Handbook of Peacebuilding, Statebuilding, and Peace Formation (2021); Normalization in World Politics (2021); and Palgrave Encyclopaedia of Peace and Conflict Studies (2021). His work has been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals, such as: Nature, International Affairs, European Journal of International Relations, Journal of Common Market Studies; Geopolitics; Review of International Studies; Cooperation and Conflict; International Studies Review; Foreign Policy Analysis; International Peacekeeping; and Civil Wars. Dr Visoka is the founding Editor of Routledge Studies in Statehood (Taylor & Francis), and Co-Editor of Rethinking Peace and Conflict Studies (Palgrave) together with Oliver P. Richmond and Annika Björkdahl). In addition to his academic activity, Dr Visoka has over 20 years of experience working with civil society groups and policy consultancy in post-conflict societies.
