Conference on Research in Mathematics Education in Ireland (MEI)
It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we invite you to attend the Seventh Conference on Research in Mathematics Education in Ireland (MEI 7). MEI 7 Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education is hosted by the Institute of Education, Dublin City University, and will take place on the St Patrick’s Campus on 11 - 12 October 2019. MEI 7 is kindly supported by the Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

MEI 7 continues with the proud tradition of hosting a series of biennial conferences on the former grounds of St. Patrick’s College which now houses Ireland’s first Institute of Education here in DCU. It is dedicated to creating a stage for sharing ideas and best practices in the field of mathematics teaching, and exchanging findings of current research in mathematics education. Previous conferences have explored themes of Crossing Boundaries in Mathematics Education, (MEI 5, 2013); Mathematics Teaching Matters (MEI 4, 2011); “Mathematics for all” - extending mathematics capacity (MEI 3, 2009); “Walking the talk” - using mathematics education research (MEI 2, 2007); and Opening Doors (MEI, 2005).
The diversity of contributors to the conference is a real strength and provides an opportunity for consultation, discussion, and co-operation. Our conference theme Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education aims to foreground learner's engagement with mathematics at all stages of the education system, and their development of mathematical proficiency within and beyond formal classroom settings. We hope that this conference will build on the knowledge and collegial networks established at previous MEI conferences and also allow for a renewal of friendships and the establishment of contacts within the mathematics education community, while also providing a forum for:
- Discussion of issues pertaining to mathematics teaching and learning across the continuum, from Early Years to Third level and beyond;
- Consideration of future directions for mathematics education research in light of recent national developments and international trends;
- Improving collaborations between mathematics education communities within Ireland and in other countries.
After a brief hiatus brought about by our hosting of CERME10, we are very happy to welcome the Mathematics Education Research community, both Irish and international, to join us in Dublin for MEI 7.

Theme: Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education
Our conference theme Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education aims to foreground learners’ engagement with mathematics at all stages of the education system, and their development of mathematical proficiency within and beyond formal classroom settings.Mathematical literacy encompasses a learner’s proficiency to engage fluently with mathematical concepts, and to apply mathematical thinking in non-routine and novel situations.
Mathematically literate children and adults recognise the mathematics in a situation, and understand how to mathematise a scenario in order to problem solve. Equally, mathematical literacy includes the capacity to interpret and analyse scenarios presented through mathematics. Mathematically literate individuals are thus less vulnerable to being convinced by inaccurate interpretations of data and mathematics. A key aspect of mathematical literacy is fluency in expressing one’s mathematical thinking in a clear and convincing manner
The notion of what it means to be mathematically literate is to a large extent dependent on the context in which mathematics is used. Some consider performance in examinations to be a determinant of level of mathematical literacy. However, successfully completing daily activities and routines such as traveling and cooking all rely on fundamental mathematical literacy, for example, knowledge of distance, time, weight and temperature. For educators, mathematical literacy encompasses far more than an ability to do mathematics oneself, but also to be able to ascertain where the learner is at in their mathematical understanding and to scaffold and extend that learning.
The education system in Ireland plays a key role in developing the mathematical literacy of all learners, to support full engagement with 21st century society. Central to such active citizenship is the propensity to apply mathematical concepts beyond the walls of the various classrooms where mathematics is taught, at primary, secondary and third levels. At MEI7 we will engage in dialogue about a broad variety of mathematical research that is taking place in Ireland, and collectively we will seek to solidify and progress the research field of mathematics education, throughout and beyond Ireland.

Dr. Paola Valero, Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Stockholm University
Paola Valero's research pursues the overall question of why and how mathematics education can be thought of as political. Her studies on the cultural politics of mathematics education shed light on the significance of mathematical qualifications for the governing of populations and the making of desired types of citizens. In particular, her research questions how the desire of more and better mathematical qualifications for all, leads to the exclusion of many from participation in meaningful mathematics education. Dr. Trakulphadetkrai’s research interests are centred around the use of storytelling to help enrich mathematics teaching and learning experiences. Currently, he leads the non-profit research-based MathsThroughSto
In addition to his roles as Lecturer in Primary Mathematics Education and as Director of Research Communications at the University of Reading’s Institute of Education, Dr. Trakulphadetkrai also serves as an executive committee member and trustee of the UK Association of Teachers of Mathematics. Previously, he served as an executive committee member of the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics; as Chair of the British Congress of Mathematics Education’s Communications Committee as well as Co-Editor of the Mathematical Association’s Primary Mathematics Journal.
We will also host a Symposium on Efficacy Beliefs of Teachers of Mathematics, welcoming Dr Mark Morgan, who has conducted extensive research in the areas of teacher motivation and job satisfaction and Dr Siún Nic Mhuirí , who will present results from an Irish study with student teachers.

All registrations for MEI7 (2019) will be carried out online using the ConfTool conference registration system. Relevant dates can be found in the above table. Registration will close for all delegates on 1 October 2019. Authors of papers for the proceedings must have registered fully by 30 June 2019.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
We invite the submission of research papers in the field of mathematics education. All papers must be submitted on the MEI7 template. All submissions will be through ConfTool. You can access the ConfTool registration system here.
All papers will be peer-reviewed by two delegates, and decisions will be shared with authors by the second week of June 2019. Submission of a paper includes a commitment to review one or two papers. Every effort will be made to allocate papers for review to delegates with a known interest in the topic of the paper. Where multiple authors submit one paper, each author will be asked to peer-review one paper. It may thus be possible for most authors to review one paper, while a small number will receive a second paper for review. When we circulate the papers for review, they will be accompanied by a review template and guidelines for reviewing.
Some accepted papers will require revisions, and final submission of revised papers will be required by 30 June 2019. For accepted papers to be included in the proceedings, the presenting author is required to register in full by 30 June 2019 at the latest.
The total registration fee is €90. A concessionary fee of €45 is available for students studying full-time, retired colleagues or delegates who are not currently employed.
The registration fee includes attendance at the conference plus lunches and coffee breaks during the conference. At registration you will also be asked if you would like to buy a parking ticket for parking on campus on Friday, 11th October, and if you would like to attend the conference dinner. There is no parking ticket required for parking on campus on Saturdays. It is very important to note that parking on the St Patrick’s campus is very limited. The conference will take place when all students and staff are in lectures and we strongly advise using public transport. Please see the Information for Delegates Attending section for details of public transport options.
On the evening of Friday, 11th October, we will gather in the Skylon Hotel to mark the conference socially.
Each author will present in a parallel session with 2 others. 90 minutes has been allocated to each parallel session, and each author will be expected to present for at most 20 minutes. This will allow 10 minutes for questions and discussion following each paper or a thirty minute discussion with all authors after the presentation of all three papers. This will be decided locally with chairs at the beginning of each session. It is very important that presentations do not exceed 20 minutes as this will impact on the time available to other authors. You have a choice of bringing your presentation on a USB or of bringing your own laptop. HDMI connections will be available, but please ensure you bring any required extensions or adapters if your device does not support projection via HDMI.

Travel to St. Patrick’s Campus, DCU.
By Air (Dublin Airport)
Two Dublin bus routes serve Dublin Airport and the venue at St. Patrick’s Campus, DCU. The 16 (towards Ballinteer) and the 41 (towards Abbey street) stop outside the Terminal 1 short term car park. The cash fare is €3.30 which must be paid exactly, in coins only, to the bus driver (no notes will be accepted and no change given.)
To find the bus stop from Terminal 1, walk straight out of the arrivals hall, cross the road and walk through the next building to the bus stands. The relevant stop is on your right. From terminal 2 arrivals, head to terminal 1, then follow the above directions.
By Sea (Dublin Port)
By Rail (Heuston, Connolly and Drumcondra Stations)
You can plan your journey with Irish Rail. The closest railway station to the venue is Drumcondra on the Maynooth/Longford/Sligo line which is just one stop from Connolly station. Exit Drumcondra station and turn left, the venue is a 12 minute walk.
Those arriving in Heuston station should exit the station and turn right. Follow the luas line up to James’s street where the 13 (towards Harristown) will bring you to St. Patrick’s Campus, DCU at a cost of €3.30 (coins only, paid to the driver.)
Travel throughout the City with Leap
You can avail of cheaper bus/luas fares and daily caps by purchasing a leap card. These cost €5 and can be purchased and topped up in most shops in Dublin city centre.
If you intend to travel a lot during your visit you can avail of daily caps on a leap visitor card: €10 for one day, €19.50 for two days. These can be purchased online or at the airport on your arrival.
