DCU graduate named as finalist in International Sustainability Award

Dr. Frida Besong, graduate of the Institute of Education, Dublin City University, named as 2018 AASHE Sustainability Award Finalist. 

13th August 2018 – The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced today that Dr. Frida Besong (a PhD graduate of the Institute of Education, Dublin City University) is a finalist for the 2018 AASHE Sustainability Awards in the AASHE Sustainability Award category for outstanding research in sustainability.

Dr. Besong was nominated for her work in Education for Sustainable Development, specifically her doctoral thesis on: "Infusing Sustainability in Higher Education in Ireland: The Green Curriculum Model (GCM) and the Dispositions, Abilities and Behaviours (DAB) Competency Framework". Dr. Charlotte Holland and Dr. Carmel Mulcahy, supervisors of this doctoral research in DCU Institute of Education, said: It is wonderful to see Frida’s research being recognised at an International level, particularly given the urgent need for action on education for sustainability as highlighted within the SDG 2030 Agenda.” Dr. Besong is currently an academic staff member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Buea, Cameroon.

Winners will be announced mid-September and recognized during the opening ceremony at the AASHE Conference & Expo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 2nd 2018. Finalists’ entries will be judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category. “The higher education sustainability community continues to stay focused on work that contributes toward a thriving, equitable and ecologically healthy world. This is most evident through the entries received for the AASHE Sustainability Awards,” said Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “I am happy that we can recognize the innovation and leadership demonstrated by this year’s finalists.”
