The Library’s Collection Development Strategy outlines the library’s approach to acquiring content for research and teaching purposes. Where possible, the library operates a ‘digital first’ approach to content provision and this, along with our need to manage limited space and resources effectively, means the library can only accept gifts of print material that meet the following criteria:
- Relevance to current teaching or research in the university
- Material is in excellent physical condition
- Does not incur a delivery cost
The library does not accept donations of:
- Superseded editions of textbooks
- Duplicate copies of existing material (check Library Search to see if the item is already in DCU library)
- Journals
- Reference material (for example encyclopaedias or dictionaries)
- Material in obsolete or inaccessible formats
How to donate to the Library
Please note that the library does not accept unsolicited donations.
- If you are considering donating materials, please contact our team at subject.team@dcu.ie in the first instance. Include the relevant subject area(s) and the publication date(s) of the items.
- If the materials are of potential interest, we will ask you to provide a detailed list for review.
This list should include, where possible: author, title, publisher, date, edition, and ISBN. - All material accepted will be integrated into our main collections. Please be aware that the library reserves the right to dispose of any items not added to the collection in a suitable manner.
DCU Library conforms to national copyright regulations. Details of how to make permitted copies are available on DCU's Copyright Policy Page.
We have a number of policies and publications for DCU Library's Archives and Special Collections which you can view here.
Introduction
Collections are central to the library’s purpose. The collections we acquire, and hold are vital to the student learning experience, and to the research endeavours of both students and scholars and the national heritage of Ireland.
This strategy outlines the principles and policies that guide and direct our collection development and management activities at DCU. This applies, where appropriate, across all scholarly resources including modern, special and archival collections. The core principles outlined reflect and action the core values of the university - student focused; open; inclusive; collaborative; collegiate and ambitious.
Core Principles
- To ensure availability, discoverability, enhanced and inclusive access to our collections, we will continue to adopt an ambitious digital first strategy to content provision where possible, relevant and affordable
- We will actively participate in national collaborative initiatives with our peers to enhance and support access to scholarly resources for the DCU community
- We will maintain our commitment to the principles of open access publishing and open research. We will continue to develop, promote and incorporate OA content into our collections
- We will partner with faculty to ensure all reading lists for taught programmes will be available online thus enabling a student focused approach to the provision of library materials
- We will regularly review our collections to align with current and future university teaching and research priorities
- We will balance the requirements for space for physical collections against the space requirement for both individual and collaborative learning and research
- We recognise that the development of unique local collections and areas of strength add value to both institutional learning and research and to the wider national and international community of scholars
- We support the principle of intellectual freedom and aim to provide collections that represent a wide range of diverse perspectives, supporting research and scholarly debate
