Academic biography

Dr Muhannad Ahmed Obeidi is an Assistant Professor in Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Materials Science in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in Dublin City University. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from Baghdad University in 1988. He was employed by several Iraqi companies in the public and private sector to work on the assembly, installation and maintenance of high precision CNC machines. Dr Obeidi completed his master’s and PhD in Mechanical and  Manufacturing Engineering at DCU in 2014 and 2018, respectively. He worked as a research assistant at the Advanced Processing Technology Centre (APT) in DCU from January 2015 till March 2018. The main area of research was focused on the laser surface processing of metal insertion for the interference-fit (press-fit) application, which is widely used in the automotive and aerospace industry. During his Ph.D., Dr Obeidi initiated new research areas in the laser processing of materials like laser surface polishing, texturing, welding, cladding, micro-machining and he was involved in several problem-solving projects. Dr. Obeidi works on laser surface hardening by glazing and nitriding to increase of wear resistance for the benefit of a world leading company in their field. He also contributed in the establishing and operating of the new Additive Manufacturing (AM) activity lab in DCU.

Research interests

Dr. Obeidi’s research to date has focused on two technical/scientific areas (1) The optimisation of the (AM) input processing parameters with reference to the output measures based on multiple types of metal powders like 316L SST, Nitinol Shape Memory Alloy (SMA), Cobalt-Chromium, Inconel, and aluminium, and (2) The laser processing and surface modification of metals. During his work, Dr. Obeidi gains respectful experience in the use of the different characterisation and inspection instruments in DCU and other institutions across the country.
