President's Research Awards 2012
This year’s President’s Research Awards were presented to Dr. John Appleby of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Dr. Francesco Cavatorta of the School of Law and Government and to Prof. Josef van Genabith of the School of Computing. The awards are presented annually to researchers who have excelled in their field.
Speaking at the ceremony, DCU President, Professor Brian MacCraith said, “While today is primarily about celebrating the excellence of our three awardees I want to take this opportunity to thank all our staff for their excellent commitment to research. The quality of the three awardees today serves to re-enforce DCU’s reputation as a research-intensive university, dedicated to providing the highest quality educational experience and the translation of research for societal and economic benefit.“
Dr. Cavatorta received the President’s Research Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences for his outstanding contribution to field of politics in the Middle East. Dr Cavatorta has been very active in translational research. His work on the role of civil society in authoritarian Arab states (funded by Irish Aid) has also been of significant interest to policy-makers and, in addition to its impact in Ireland, it has been presented (on special request) to policy community seminars in Denmark and the Netherlands. More recently his work on political Islam has attracted a large grant from the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, a private foundation based in Germany.

Dr. John Appleby received the President’s Research Award for Science and Engineering research has principally been concerned with understanding the qualitative behaviour of stochastic functional differential equations. John has published over 80 peer reviewed journal papers and refereed conference papers which have attracted in excess of 185 citations. He has also presented at least 40 papers at international conferences and has been an invited speaker on over 20 occasions in Ireland, France, Hungary, Turkey, Canada, Russia, China and the USA.

The President’s Research Award for Science and Engineering is made to Prof. Josef van Genabith of the School of Computing for his exceptional contribution to the field of computational linguistics and for spearheading DCU’s leadership in academia-industry collaborative research. Josef’s significant research accomplishments, presented in more than 100 peer-reviewed international research publications, have not only shaped the evolution of computational linguistics worldwide; they have also helped brand DCU and Ireland as world leaders in language technology.
