Meet the Sabbaticals

At the start of a new academic year, meet the new sabbatical officers at DCU Students’ Union.

Aaron Clogher, a 24 year old Business Studies graduate from Roscommon and formerly Vice President for Education at DCUSU, has been elected to the position of President for 2013-2014.   Aaron attended secondary school at Garbally College, Ballinasloe and has a keen interest in sport, particularly all things GAA and currently acts as PRO for the National Higher Education GAA Committee in Croke Park.

Aaron said "It's a privilege for me to be re-elected by the DCU student body, as President for the coming year.  I hope to make the most of this opportunity and use the skills and experience I gained in my role last year as best I can. I hope I can help students in whatever way and try to ensure that their student experience is as good as mine has been!"

Ciarán O’Connor has been elected to the position of Education Officer for the coming year.  A native of Athlone, just inside the border in Roscommon, he is a proud 'man of the west' despite coming to DCU to study Communication Studies in September 2010 and not having left yet!

Ciarán jumped into the deep end of society life right from the off and got involved with the Media Production Society and in particular, DCUfm. He began by reading news bulletins and soon was working on the current affairs show fostering his love of radio and audio production. In his third year, Ciaran was elected as Manager of DCUfm and spent the year training, programming and fixing the station for its 250+ volunteers.

"I would count joining DCUfm and running for sabbatical as the greatest decisions I've made in my time in DCU. Getting involved for the betterment of my own education and experience taught me a lot and hopefully, I can help students make this year a fantastic one for them!", Ciarán says.

Ciaran is focusing on a number of issues as Education Officer including looking at the Class Rep structure in DCU as well as spreading awareness around the Personal Tutor programme and the various Students' Union campaigns throughout the year.

21 year old, Lorna Finnegan, from Cavan, has been appointed as Welfare Officer after graduating with a BA in Communications Studies.  Throughout her three years as a student at DCU, Lorna was involved in the Ladies GAA team, Media Production Society, Style Society and Raising & Giving.

Looking forward to the year ahead, Lorna says "Having met such a variety of people over my three years in DCU, I had the best years of my life and look forward to giving back to the students this year as Welfare officer!"
