Irish researcher wins European Excellence Prize

Dr Aiden Doherty, a former Irish Research Council Scholar at DCU (2005-2008), and currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford has been recognised for his exceptional achievements by the European Commission through its Marie Sklodowska-Curie Awards for outstanding contributions to research.  Dr Doherty’s research interest is in the development of computational methods to extract meaningful health information from complex and noisy sensor data in very large health studies.

David Hoey is Associate Professor of Biomechanical Engineering in TCD, funded by the Irish Research Council and the European Union’s MSCA COFUND and also received an award.  He has pursued cutting-edge fundamental research into developing innovative treatments for bone-loss diseases such as osteoporosis.

In congratulating the two Irish Research Council Alumni on their success, the Chair of the Irish Research Council, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer noted that

“Securing these prizes represents a very significant achievement for the recipients. The Government’s commitment in the new national strategy Innovation 2020 to a new Frontiers Research programme which will support the best research talent across all disciplines and all career stages will ensure ongoing international competitiveness and an ever growing international research reputation for Ireland.”
