2015 Digicel Interns

Two DCU students will complete internships in the Digicel Group regional head office in the Caribbean this summer. Ronke Balogun (3rd Year, Accounting and Finance) will work in the Finance department in Curacao and Kah Halle (3rd Year, Business Studies) will work in the HR department in Jamaica for eight weeks.

Digicel and the DCU Educational Trust have collaborated for a number of years to provide this unique work experience placement for students in DCU. Interns are placed in departments relevant to their degree programme, getting the opportunity to gain experience in a global company while travelling throughout the Caribbean as part of the job.  Interns have also had the chance to discuss business and career advice with Colm Delves, Group CEO and a graduate of DCU.

Leona Gaughan, HR Manager for Digicel commented “Interns experience the same opportunities as other staff members to get involved in projects, test their skills and contribute to solutions. Working alongside senior members of staff in a multinational business gives interns business acumen and skills at a very early stage in their career, not to mention the great opportunities for travel and making new contacts that come with spending the summer in Digicel in Jamaica.”

Jason Martin, an intern in the department of the Chief Commercial Officer in 2013, experienced the valuable opportunities available when, after working on a project to increase bill pay revenues, he and his team flew to Miami to present their work to company directors, including the Group Chairman.

Jason commented “I know this will always be a stand-out moment in my career and in an internship that was the greatest experience I have had both work-wise and socially. When I returned to Ireland, it was much less daunting to start my job in the Foreign Direct Investment team in PwC because of the knowledge I acquired working on key projects in Digicel.”

Advantages to the programme continue outside of office hours. Jona Kalemi, 2014 intern and keen athlete, discovered an added bonus to the job when she was invited to train alongside Olympians in the Digicel-sponsored MVP running club, led by world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Previous interns have progressed to roles in Twitter, Pwc and Quantcast and in some cases, have taken up other positions with Digicel in Jamaica. To find out more about the internship, please contact the Educational Trust
