World’s Top Young Universities to gather at DCU summit

Dublin City University has been announced as the host of the 2015 Times Higher Education (THE)Young Universities Summit on 29th to 30th April, 2015.  The second annual summit, which brings together the academic institutions that are the rising stars globally and the future powerhouses of education and research, dedicated to the specific challenges and opportunities facing young universities, will include the official worldwide launch of the 2015 THE 100 Under 50 Rankings – a unique ranking of the top 100 universities under 50 years old.

Brian MacCraith, president of DCU, said,

“Dublin City University is delighted to partner with Times Higher Education in hosting the second global Young Universities Summit.  It’s a major endorsement of DCU, reflecting our position among the world's leading young, innovative universities.  YUS 2015 will bring together leaders and leading thinkers from some of the most dynamic, innovative and distinctive young universities worldwide to share best practice and address some of the key challenges and opportunities facing higher education today.  As a globally-engaged university committed to transforming lives and societies through education, research and innovation, we look forward to sharing a platform with some of the world’s most visionary and successful young universities.”

As well as providing networking opportunities, the summit will address a number of key issues:

  • How can young universities compete on a world stage?

  • The role of young universities in engaging with civic society and major societal    issues

  • The challenges of establishing world-class universities without centuries of history and tradition

  • How can we best include innovation metrics in ranking systems?

  • The relation between funding and the achievement of excellence

  • Distinctiveness and brand in a competitive global market

  • Leadership challenges for less established universities

Keynote speakers will include thought leaders from the world’s leading young universities such as Bertil Anderson, President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore; Patrick Aebischer, President of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland; Atul Chauhan, Chancellor of Amity University, India; and Luc Soete, Rector of Maastricht University.

Times Higher Education rankings editor Phil Baty confirmed that the summit will include the launch of the 2015 THE 100 Under 50 Rankings, which will be published online at 9pm on Wednesday 29 April 2015.  The event will include a full global rankings master class.

Mr Baty said,

“Our first ever Young Universities Summit was held last year in Miami and was a resounding success – senior delegates from all over the world came together with a clear set of shared interests, united by the unique challenges and opportunities they face in leading institutions without the centuries of history that characterise the traditional global elite.  There was a great sense of optimism at the meeting – young universities may not have the rich history or the rich resources and reputations of their older counterparts, but they have a sense of energy, flexibility and dynamism that some of the ancient universities can lack.  We’ll be building on that dynamism in Dublin.”
