Conference to explore contexts of nursing in marginalised health

Nurses who work in contexts of marginalised health are at the forefront of providing comprehensive care to vulnerable and often stigmatised populations facing multiple and complex social and health problems. The School of Nursing and Human Sciences in Dublin City University will host a conference on Friday 11th September which will bring nurses from a variety of services together to consider the contexts, practices and development of nursing in marginalised health in Ireland.

A range of factors can result in people experiencing marginalisation in social inclusion and health provision, including homelessness, poverty, migrancy, gender and sexual identity/practice, mental health problems, disability, substance use and stigma.  Marginalisation and poor health are interlinked and many of those who are marginalised experience complex health challenges which are strongly influenced by their individual social circumstances.  The conference programme includes speakers from Department of Health, HSE nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, Social Inclusion Unit, HSE and nurses working in this area.

Dr Briege Casey, conference organiser and course coordinator of the Certificate in Homeless Prevention and Intervention in DCU, said,

“This conference offers an opportunity to discuss the nursing priorities of marginalised populations, to share current best practice in Ireland and to consider how nursing can develop therapeutically and professionally in this area.”

Anne Pearson from the Queens Nursing Institute in the UK will also join the conference to present a case study as to how their organisation developed an effective homeless health network in the UK to advance nursing practice and to respond to the healthcare needs of those who are marginalised.

Attendance at this event is free and a light lunch will be provided.  Further details, including booking facility, can be found at the following link https://eventbrite.ie/event/17414845271/
