A great weekend for DCU Athletics

Celtic Universities International, Scotland

DCU athletes won no fewer than 8 individual races, 5 runners up and 2 bronze finishes at the Celtic Universities T&F championships in Kilmarnock, Scotland over the weekend. These performances contributed greatly to the Irish Universities winning all team titles against our Scottish counterparts. Individual winners included Sophie Parkinson Brown in the Discus, Megan Moynihan in the Hammer, Conor Durnin in the Triple Jump, Matthew Behan in the 110m Hurdles, Katie McGowan in the 400m Hurdles, Grainne Moynihan in the 400m, Harriette Robinson in the 3000m S/C and Michael Carey in the 3000m S/C. There were also great performances from Brendan Hyland in the Javelin, Mieke Kiernan in the Hammer, Brendan Flynn in the Pole Vault, Kelly McGrory in the 400m, Jenny Murphy in the Javelin, Oisin Taylor in the Triple Jump, Lynda Nganham in the Triple Jump and Eimear Treacy in the 800m   

Flanders IFAM, Oordegem, Belgium

DCU had 12 athletes competing at the IFAM International in Oordegem, Belgium with pride of place going to Pierre Murchan who ran a World Juniors 5000m personal best of 14.14 (not bad for your first ever 5K on the track). David Mc Carthy romped to a 13.42 in another 5K with Keith Fallon running a new 1500m PB of 3.48. Others to perform with distinction at IFAM included Catherine McManus (Sprints), Sarah Murray (Sprints), Steffi Creaner (Sprints), Lilly Ann O Hora (100m Hurdles), Joseph Ojewumi (Sprints), Colm Bourke (Jumps), Darragh Lynch (800m), David Scanlon and Damian Murphy in the 5000m.

AAI Games, Santry

There were many outstanding performances from DCU athletes at the AAI Games with Greta Streimikyte smashing her 1500m PB by 6 seconds – another qualifying standard for the Rio Olympics! Saragh Buggy won the Ladies Triple Jump with a new personal best and Under 23 National record of 12.88m while Adam King qualified for the World Juniors with a massive 70.48m in the Men’s hammer! Shane Aston won the National Decathlon title with Mark Rogers 3rd. Paul Murphy cruised to victory in the 400m while James Kelly won the Shot Putt. Cormac Kelly and Kevin Kelly both placed in the 800m with seasonal bests. Other DCU athletes in action included Niall Flanagan (Sprints), Conor Daly (Jumps), Anne Marie Torsney (Throws),Emma Owens (Throws), Bronwyn Keogh (Sprints),Daniel Scully (800m) and Ciara Cummins (800m).

European Clubs, Leiria, Portugal

Keith Pike, Antonio Garcia, Timmy Crowe (all Clonliffe Harriers) and Katie Berney (DSDAC) competed for their respective clubs at the European Club championships in Portugal.

A special word of thanks must go to all our coaches who continued to work with all our athletes during the May summer examinations period resulting in some outstanding achievements over the weekend.
