Teaching Excellence Award for DCU Alumnus

Journalist, lecturer, photographer, filmmaker and DCU PhD student in Communications Studies, Stephen Desmond (pictured), has been awarded an 'Excellence in Teaching' award by Southampton Solent University, where he has been a Senior Lecturer for almost 10 years.

Desmond, who grew up in Glasnevin, is an alumnus of DCU Communications Studies and The University of Michigan.

He has taught in the renowned MFA in Design & Technology at the Parson's School of Design in New York (internationally recognised as the No.1 university for the creative arts in the USA) for many years.

The Film & Media Department at Solent has recently been ranked by The Guardian as No.15 out of a field of 85 university film & media departments across the UK, placing 'Film @ SSU' higher than Goldsmiths and King's College, London.

At the recent awards ceremony in Southampton, Desmond was especially commended for his work with LGBT students, BME students and International students.

As well as being a full-time Senior Lecturer in Filmmaking at Southampton Solent University, he is the founder of The Centre for Conflict Resolution Journalism (https://www.ccrj.org) - an NGO which boasts an illustrious board of directors including: President Michael D. Higgins, Mary Lawlor of Frontline Defenders, Professor William Shabas, the expert in Human Rights Law, and John Hume.
