Chief Justice of the Supreme Court visits DCU

Rt. Hon. Frank Clarke, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland, gave a keynote address at DCU earlier today, concluding the weekly seminar series of DCU’s Law Research Centre for the spring semester 2019.

Explaining that "what happens in the courts is of considerable importance" the Chief Justice gave an account of the domestic and international challenges facing the Irish judiciary system and discussed ongoing efforts to address them.

In particular, the Chief Justice underlined how Brexit represents a challenge for the Irish common law, but how it could also be an opportunity as Ireland could become a centre for international dispute resolutions post-Brexit. For that to happen, the Chief Justice indicated that "we need good and efficient courts" and emphasized the importance of increasing the knowledge of European law as a key part of the training for future lawyers, praising the leading work being done at DCU Law on both European law research and teaching.
