DCU announced as a finalist in SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards

Dublin City University (DCU) has been announced as a finalist in the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Energy Awards.

DCU is one of 22 organisations who have been shortlisted as finalists across seven categories.

Professor Brian MacCraith, DCU President, said: “I am delighted that DCU has been shortlisted again for the SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards. This achievement is an endorsement of the ‘whole of university’ approach to sustainability, as reflected in our strategic plan goal “to place sustainability at the core of the university”.

“In particular, energy reduction has been a particular focus, and our energy reduction metrics are a source of pride to all in the university.”

DCU takes an all-encompassing approach to energy conservation.

It’s the combination of a structured, motivated, forward-thinking, strategic and innovative utilities management plan combining the crucial operational elements needed to manage energy on a daily basis, while focusing on reducing carbon into the future.

This all-integrative approach includes engagement with our Research and Learning Schools so that energy management is core to all university activities.

As such, the university has enjoyed cumulative savings of over €10 million, avoided energy consumption of over 70 GWh, and has seen a 43.4pc energy performance improvement.

The university plans to drive this aggressive, ambitious and collaborative approach towards 2030 and beyond.

With strong-committed-leadership and  real vision, DCU are leading the charge with respect to energy management and conservation.

DCU have been shortlisted in the ‘Public Sector - Leadership’ category alongside NUI Galway, TG4 and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.

The university has five campuses and more than 80 buildings across the northside of Dublin, delivering programmes to more than 17,000 students.

Commenting on the competition, Fergus Sharkey, Head of the Public and Private Sector Business in SEAI said:

“Each year the SEAI Energy Awards celebrate the leaders in sustainable energy and energy efficiency. The awards shine a light on their significant achievements in the hope that they will inspire others to take action.

“All sectors of society have a say in what our energy future will look like and we all have a responsibility to act. The finalists are leading the way in this action and I commend them on their significant achievements.”

The winners will be announced at a special gala event on Wednesday, October 16th.
