Tech and digital storytelling in focus in part two of IOE "From a Distance" series

A practical session on how children and teens can use digital technology tools to create fun and educational content will feature this coming Tuesday, May 5th at 1.00pm in the second instalment of DCU’s Institute of Education Facebook Live Broadcast “From a Distance.

As the kitchen table has become the new learning hub, the series provides advice and guidance on the many ways and means to enable school-going children and teenagers to continue to learn and remain engaged during this challenging time.

The focus of part two is on the topic of “moving from consuming content to creating content” and will be presented by Denis Moynihan, Assistant Professor in Education (Primary - Digital Learning).

During the session, Denis will provide practical advice on how learners can be supported to move from consuming content to creating digital content.

Denis, who works with student teachers at primary school level to prepare them to embed digital learning in their learning, teaching and assessment will discuss the many ways in which learners can become content creators which in turn enables deeper levels of understanding.

“A certain amount of consuming content will always be necessary, but there are educational benefits to putting what you’ve learnt into practice through creating content.

We will focus on creation versus delivery, enabling kids to pursue their passions,” said Denis.

Topics which will be covered:

Consuming vs Creating

- What are the differences

-Putting what has been learned into practice by creating content

-Using the tools and resources available to you

-Digital Storytelling - using technology to assist in telling a story.

Drawing on experience as a primary school teacher in the Northside of Dublin City and teacher educator as part of the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) - Digital Technologies team, Denis combines a wealth of practical and theoretical experience.

He tweets at @moyno_d on the topics of digital technology, education, digital learning and resources for schools and teachers.
