DCU President pays tribute to the late Séamus Mallon

DCU President Prof Brian MacCraith has paid tribute to the late Seamus Mallon, describing him as "a courageous champion for peace and social justice in Northern Ireland".

The former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister and architect of the Northern Ireland Peace Process passed away on January 24th, at the age of 83.

His funeral took place in St James' of Jerusalem Church in Mullaghbrack, Co Armagh, on Monday, January 27th.

In 2013, DCU  conferred the former SDLP deputy leader with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy along with former Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble. The conferral was in recognition of their contribution to the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

"On behalf of DCU, I want to express our condolences to the family and colleagues of the late Seamus Mallon," Prof MacCraith said.

"Seamus was a courageous champion for peace and social justice in Northern Ireland. His tireless work was pivotal in securing an end to the violence of the Troubles and in establishing a lasting settlement on the island of Ireland.

"As Deputy First Minister, he helped consolidate the achievements of the Good Friday Agreement, by demonstrating his belief in reconciliation and a shared future for all communities in the north. In 2013, DCU conferred a Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) on Seamus in recognition of his life’s work for peace.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam," Prof MacCraith said.
