Prep to prevent- injury prevention tips and advice for novice and seasoned runners

The restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus have had an enormous impact on people’s lives and daily routines.

As of last week, the limitations on movement have been lifted, allowing people to extend up to 5km from their homes, which has proved a welcome boost to many.

Undoubtedly, trying to maintain good physical and mental well-being during this unprecedented time has been a challenge for all.

Owing to the closures of gyms and sports clubs, the popularity of running has soared even further as people try to get some form of physical exercise on a daily basis.

This coming Wednesday at 1.00pm, (May 13th) Aoife Burke, a PhD researcher at DCU’s School of Health and Human Performance, investigating the risk factors of running-related injuries will be on hand with expert research advice and practical expertise for both novice and seasoned runners who are trying to put their best foot forward during this tough time.

Aoife will be on hand to show people some warm-up routines as well as some exercises that runners may benefit from, assisting them in maintaining good musculoskeletal health.

She will also be able to address any questions or queries you may have in relation to injury rehabilitation. A graduate of DCU with a degree in Athletic Therapy and Training (2011), Aoife has spent many years working with both the FAI and Dublin GAA as well as with ExWell Medical as a private practitioner.

During this time she has gained a wealth of extensive knowledge around the area of injury rehabilitation and prevention with both elite and recreational populations.

Aoife is also an integral member of the research team spearheading the DCU RISC study. Along with co-researcher Sarah Dillon, they have carried out a full performance analysis of over 300 runners over the past two years combining analysis with state-of-the art technology.

The study also involves Dr Kieran Moran, Dr Siobhán O’Connor, Dr Enda Whyte and Dr Shane Gore.

Tune in this Wednesday, May 13th at 1.00pm.
