About DCU Futures

Origins and Development

The Initial Phase (2021-2025)

Between 2021 and 2025, DCU Futures developed and implemented ten new undergraduate programmes across multiple disciplines, from business to engineering. These include Climate and Environmental Sustainability, Psychology with Disruptive Technology, Digital Business and Innovation, Physics with Data Analytics, Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence, and Mechanical and Sustainability Engineering, among others.

This phase involved significant change management, supported by community building, stakeholder engagement, and robust governance structures. International expertise informed program development and review through the International Pedagogy Advisory Panel (IPAP), which comprised four experts in innovative pedagogies who met twice annually to provide feedback to academic teams.

During this time, DCU Futures created capacity for over 1,000 additional students and fundamentally reimagined how undergraduate education is designed and delivered.

Supporting Structures
The implementation of DCU Futures is supported by comprehensive institutional frameworks.

The Teaching Enhancement Unit leads pedagogical development and provides guidance to colleagues on a variety of innovations, including challenge-based learning and assessment.

DCU Studio offers support in learning design and media production, having developed online content for over 70 modules. The International Pedagogy Advisory Panel, which last convened in May 2025, provides external expertise and quality assurance.

Governance structures and processes

Extensive governance and implementation structures were established during the initial phase, such as the Strategic Learning and Innovation Projects Steering Group, and, the Virtual Labs, Transversal Skills, and Challenge-Based Learning working groups, and these continue to operate today. These structures enable colleagues to collaborate, share best practices, and integrate new teaching methods. Programme governance includes programme boards with student representation, faculty implementation teams, and evaluation conducted through the Institute of Education.
