DCU Futures for Students
Your Learning Experience
If you're studying on a programme that implements the DCU Futures philosophy, your learning experience will differ from traditional lecture-based approaches. You'll engage actively with your subject through collaborative projects, real-world challenges, partnership with industry professionals and the development of Transversal Skills.
What to Expect
Active and Collaborative Learning
Your learning will emphasise participation, discussion, and application of knowledge. You'll work in teams, tackle complex problems, and develop solutions collaboratively. Classes take place in flexible learning spaces designed to support group work and interactive activities.
Challenge-Based Learning
Many programmes include challenge-based learning modules where you'll work on real problems set by industry partners or community organisations. These challenges allow you to apply your knowledge to issues that matter—from sustainability and technology to social innovation and business transformation. You'll develop practical skills while building your portfolio of work.
Transversal Skills Development
Beyond your discipline-specific knowledge, you'll develop transversal skills including creative thinking, problem-solving, communication, and digital literacy. These skills are formally embedded in your curriculum and assessed within your modules.
Through the MySkills platform, you can track and evidence your transversal skills development. The platform houses:
- Skills competencies assessed by your lecturers
- Self-reported competencies you've developed
- A comprehensive record to share with potential employers
Access MySkills to view your skills profile and evidence your capabilities.
Your programme may incorporate virtual reality labs, immersive simulations, digital assessment methods, or online learning resources. These technologies provide learning experiences that complement traditional approaches and develop your digital capabilities.
As a DCU Futures student, you're a partner in your education. You have opportunities to contribute to curriculum development through:
- Student summits and feedback sessions
- Programme board representation
- Module and assessment reviews
- Annual showcase events
Your input helps shape programme design and ensures curriculum remains relevant and engaging.
Student Showcase
Each year, the DCU Futures Student Showcase provides a platform to present your project work, share learning experiences, and connect with peers, industry partners, and potential employers. The showcase celebrates innovation and demonstrates the application of your skills across different contexts.
