Physical Sciences | Leaving Certificate Experiments
Are you a teacher of a Leaving Certificate physics class?
The DCU Faculty of Science and Health are hosting a number of laboratory sessions, where Leaving Certificate students and teachers will get the chance to complete a selection of the mandatory physics experiments.
These sessions will run on Mondays, from December to mid-April. Schools can sign up for a two-hour slot (10 am – 12 pm or 1 pm – 3pm). A physics-themed talk or tour of our research labs will be held for both groups from 12 pm – 1 pm.
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get hands on with their physics experiments, to develop their understanding of key physics concepts and skills and to revise experimental work done across Leaving Cert.
The following experiments will be set up:
- acceleration due to gravity (air track, 2 set-ups)
- conservation of momentum (air track, 2 set-ups)
- focal length of a convex lens (2 set-ups)
- focal length of a concave mirror (2 set-ups)
- resistivity of a wire (4 set-ups)
- thermistor (4 set-ups)
- diffraction grating (4 set-ups)
- pendulum (4 set-ups)
We will provide the experimental set-ups and technical support, you as the class teacher will run the experiments on the day.
How to Apply
There is no fee for attending these sessions but pre-booking is essential. To do so, complete this web form. Booking closes on Friday, December 12th at 11:59 PM, 2025. Anybody wishing to attend the December session should complete their booking by the end of November. These sessions are usually oversubscribed so book early to avoid disappointment and if you book and then cannot attend, please let us know asap, so that we can offer the place to another school.
