Academic biography

Dr Bernadette Ní Áingléis is Associate Professor at DCU Institute of Education and has recently completed her term of appointment as Associate Dean for Placements and Related PartnershipsShe has held Directorships of School Placement (2000-2016) for the BEd and the Professional Master of Education, and for the National Induction Programme for Teachers. 

Her professional career spans a broad range of teaching, research and continuing professional development experiences at all levels of the continuum of teacher education at both a national and international level. She has held various roles in education such as primary teacher, principal (Irish-medium school), curriculum designer and member of the Inspectorate (Department of Education and Skills). She has been an elected member of the Governing Body of DCU St Patrick's Campus.

Bernadette has a particular research interest in 
educational policy and professional regulation, the interface between law and education, school-university partnerships in teacher education, and student voice. She has published and presented her research both nationally and internationally as well as leading various projects with partners in Ireland and elsewhere.

As well as supervising students at doctoral level, Bernadette leads the teacher education area of professional focus on the Professional Doctorate in Education at DCU. She also teaches various undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the following areas: education and the law; professional practice and regulation; models of mentoring and professional practice, and teacher education. She is an accredited mediator in civil and commercial practice with a particular focus on mediation in education contexts.

Bernadette has also designed and delivered 
online courses in child protection, mentoring and professional learning and teacher education. These courses are used extensively across DCU, Ireland and elsewhere. She is the recipient of various awards such as the NUI gold medals in education, and Gaeilge as well as awards of excellence in law. She has also been the recipient of a professional fellowship in education. Bernadette was co-nominated in 2019 for the President's Award for excellence in teaching in DCU.
