What is PPI?
Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) is research carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public, rather than simply ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them.
This means involving patients, carers and members of the public as active partners in health and social care research. This can include identifying research priorities, designing and undertaking research, and disseminating and implementing research findings. Ideally, PPI begins early and continues throughout the research cycle.
Meaningful PPI can make research more relevant, more trusted, and more likely to make a real impact in people’s lives.
Importantly, PPI is different from taking part in a research study: PPI contributors are partners in the research process, rather than research participants, and PPI is not a method of data collection.
PPI Ignite Network - Phase II
The PPI Ignite Network promotes excellence and innovation in PPI in health and social care research across the island of Ireland. Following the initial PPI Ignite Programme (2017 to 2021) and PPI Ignite Network Phase I (2021 to 2026), Phase II runs from 2026 to 2031.
Phase II brings together 11 Universities, 10 All-Island Partner Organisations, and 80+ Local Partnerships between universities and individuals or organisations.
The Phase II vision is to support inclusive, equitable, and meaningful PPI across all areas of health and social care research on the island of Ireland by enabling collaboration and innovation, building capacity, and sharing learning to embed high-quality PPI into research systems and culture.

PPI Ignite Network at DCU
DCU is one of the 11 university partners in Phase II of the PPI Ignite Network.
The PPI Ignite Network at DCU works across the University to strengthen the quality and impact of PPI in health and social care research. We support researchers and research teams to plan and develop meaningful PPI and connect DCU activity with wider developments across the all-island Network.
