Dr Reihaneh Aghamolaei
Biography
Dr Aghamolaei joined DCU in 2021 as an Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. She previously held lecturing roles at University College Dublin and Griffith College Dublin, specialising in building energy performance analysis, building physics, and energy optimisation. She also worked as a sustainability engineer in Ireland's AEC industry, focusing on sustainable building design and energy performance assessment.
Research Expertise
Dr Aghamolaei's research centres on data-driven energy modelling, techno-economic energy optimisation, and renewable energy integration through novel and holistic modelling techniques. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed works in areas such as building energy performance modelling, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and optimisation.

Dr Sunder Ali Khowaja
Biography
Dr Sunder Ali Khowaja is an Assistant Professor at DCU's School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Computing. He is an Academic Collaborator within the ADAPT Centre. He completed his undergraduate studies in Telecommunication Engineering (2008) and MSc in Communication Systems and Networks (2014) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. He completed his PhD in Industrial and Information Systems Engineering (2019) from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Republic of Korea. He was a postdoctoral research fellow (2021) at the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Tech University of Korea.
Research Expertise
His research lies at the juncture between deep learning, computer vision, and Trustworthy AI, especially in the context of healthcare, generative AI, Communication Systems, and Agentic AI. His recent research focuses on the design and implementation of model inversion, model poisoning, and membership inference attack methods along with their defence mechanisms. Dr Khowaja is also the recipient of First Runner-up and Second Runner-up at CVPR's UG2+ Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation Challenge (2022–2023).

Dr Muhammad Salman Pathan
Biography
Dr Muhammad Salman is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computing, Dublin City University. He completed a PhD in Software Engineering in 2019 from Beijing University of Technology, China, where he received a fully funded China Scholarship Council scholarship. In 2020, he was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Action fellowship and joined University College Dublin as a Research Scientist. From 2022 to 2024, Dr Salman served as Senior Postdoctoral Researcher and Team Lead on the EPA-funded Circular Artificial Intelligence (CircAI) project at Maynooth University.

Dr Salman has applied his expertise in AI to domains such as Weather Forecasting, Telecommunications, Digital Health, and Sustainability. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals. Dr Hyowon Lee
Biography
Hyowon Lee is an Assistant Professor at Dublin City University. His research areas are Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and interaction design, particularly focusing on User Experience (UX), user-interface design, and usability. He has designed over 60 novel applications, of which 32 were formally usability-tested and 10 were deployed and used by real users over time. He has disseminated his work in over 160 peer-reviewed publications including the monograph Living Digital 2040. His publications have received over 2,400 citations (h-index 28). Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design and a visiting scholar at MIT.

Dr Conor Boland
Biography
Dr Conor S. Boland is an Assistant Professor of Materials Science at Dublin City University and Deputy Director of Innovation in the RAPID Institute. His research spans nanomaterials, sustainable composites and advanced wearable bioelectronics, with particular emphasis on graphene, activated carbon, clay and mica nanosheets, and food-derived hydrogel systems. Dr Hossein Javidnia
Biography
Dr Hossein Javidnia is an Assistant Professor in Computing at DCU and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin. With over 15 years of experience spanning academic research and executive industrial R&D, he is a pivotal figure in 3D reconstruction, SLAM, and scalable cloud-native AI architectures. He earned his PhD in Electronic & Electrical Engineering from NUI Galway, followed by a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the ADAPT Centre, TCD. He also served as Head of R&D for Union Avatars (2022–2025) and Lead AI Engineer at Syze AI. His industrial work has resulted in multiple US patents in computer vision and augmented reality.

Dr Mohammad Saffari
Biography
Dr Mohammad Saffari is an Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at DCU, internationally recognised for his work in sustainable buildings and integrated energy systems. He serves as PI for major EU and national research projects including HYSTORE (Horizon Europe) and GEONORM (SEAI). Before joining DCU, he worked with the UCD Energy Institute and the GREiA Research Group (Spain). He is a member of the APT Research Centre and the DCU Centre for Decarbonisation, Sustainability and Innovation.

Dr Yalemisew Abgaz
Biography
Dr Yalemisew Abgaz is an Assistant Professor of Computing at Dublin City University. His research focuses on the practical design and deployment of AI- and semantic-based systems. As PI on the international ChIA project with the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he developed AI-driven tools for cultural and historical image collections. He also leads DCU's university-wide Data Literacy and Analytics module, reaching thousands of students annually. He is a recipient of the national SATLE Impact Award and holds Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Prof Dr Christian Kaunert is Professor of International Security at DCU, Jean Monnet Chair, and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and Jean Monnet Network on EU Counter-Terrorism (EUCTER). He has researched and taught at many international universities. Over his career, he has been awarded seven Marie Curie Fellowships, four Jean Monnet Chairs, three Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence, and one Jean Monnet Network of Excellence. Dr Diarmuid Torney is an Associate Professor in the School of Law and Government at DCU and Director of the DCU Institute for Climate and Society. Dr Goran Dominioni is an Assistant Professor in Climate Change Law and Policy at the DCU School of Law and Government, and Visiting Professor at the World Maritime University. He is PI of a United Nations Foundation grant on shipping decarbonisation. His research has been cited in the Financial Times, the Guardian, and France24, and has been awarded prizes by MIT Climate CoLab, ELPAR, and the World Bank. He has an LLM from Yale Law School and a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Paola Rivetti is Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations at the School of Law and Government, DCU. She is the author of Political Participation in Iran from Khatami to the Green Movement (2020) and Storia dell'Iran: Rivoluzione, guerra e resistenza (2026). She leads the DCU-based unit of the Horizon Europe project INTERFACED: Interfaces for Democratic Participation, working on Tunisia. Dr Ruairí Brannigan
Biography
Dr Ruairí Brannigan is an Assistant Professor in Materials Chemistry at DCU (since 2021). He completed his degree at DCU and PhD in Polymer Chemistry at the University of Warwick. In 2017, he was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions individual fellowship (highest grading in the Chemistry strand), conducting research at RCSI on polyester-peptide hybrid biomaterials. He subsequently held a Senior Postdoctoral position at RCSI and played a central role in securing an Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund (StarMat).

Research focuses on bridging monomer design, synthetic polymer chemistry, and materials science for biomedical, agricultural, and packaging industries. Dr Deirdre Murray
Biography
Dr Deirdre Murray is an Associate Professor in Neurorehabilitation and Technology in the School of Health and Human Performance, supporting the DCU MSc Physiotherapy programme. She completed her PhD at RCSI in 2013. She subsequently worked clinically in adult neurology and advanced practice roles, and as a member of the MND research team at Trinity College Dublin, where she continues involvement in the PrecisionALS programme. She is the Academic lead on the DCU exoskeleton programme (adult and paediatric).

Dr Hannah Goss
Biography
Hannah Goss is an Assistant Professor in Physical Activity Behaviour Change in the School of Health and Human Performance at DCU, and Director of LifeLab Dublin. She leads the wider LifePAC research group. As an international expert, she was a leading figure in research teams that developed the All Island Physical Literacy Consensus Statement and the Physical Literacy Consensus Statement for England. She was the lead author of the national Sláintecare Healthy Communities health literacy report.

Dr Denis Collins
Biography
Denis Collins is an Assistant Professor in the School of Biotechnology, DCU Life Sciences Institute Cancer Lead, and Principal Investigator of the Cancer Biotherapeutics Research Group. He completed his PhD on drug resistance in lung cancer at DCU, followed by IRCSET Postdoctoral Fellowship, a Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship (co-located between DCU and Roche Innovation Center Munich), and the Caroline Foundation Senior Research Fellowship at DCU. He is a member of the Irish Association for Cancer Research Senior Council.

The Cancer Biotherapeutics Research Group focuses on: (1) understanding the interplay between biotherapeutics and the immune system; (2) determining the underlying mechanisms of resistance to biotherapeutics; and (3) identifying patients who will most benefit from biotherapeutics through analysis of patient-derived translational material from clinical trials.

Biography
Dr Ronan Egan is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics in the School of Mathematical Sciences at DCU. He completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Galway in 2015, specialising in Algebraic Design Theory. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Rijeka (2016–2018) and University of Galway (2018–2021) before joining DCU in 2021.

Dr Peter Taylor
Biography
Dr Peter Taylor is an Assistant Professor at the DCU School of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the DCU Centre for Astrophysics and Relativity (CfAR). He graduated from UCD in 2006, completed a Masters in Theoretical Physics at Cambridge (Distinction), and a PhD at UCD in 2011. He held an Assistant Professorship at Trinity College Dublin (2011–2014) and was a Marie Curie Research Fellow at Cornell University. He is an expert in quantum field theory in curved spacetimes and the theory of semi-classical gravity.

Dr Michael Freeley
Biography
Michael Freeley is an Associate Professor in the School of Biotechnology and Principal Investigator of the T-cell Signalling laboratory at DCU. He obtained his BSc in Biotechnology from DCU (First class honours) and PhD in Immunology from RCSI. He worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at RCSI and as a Research Fellow at TCD before returning to DCU in 2016. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023. The Freeley laboratory has active collaborations with Almirall and Atomwise (San Francisco), and is funded by the Irish Research Council in collaboration with Queen's University Belfast.

Prof Hamsa Venkat
Biography
Prof Hamsa Venkat holds the Naughton Chair in Early Years and Primary STEM Education at DCU. Her own work is in primary mathematics education, with particular interest in interventions, policy, and curricula focused on improving outcomes in contexts of poverty. She has led large-scale research and development projects in South Africa and Ireland. She is currently hosting two post-doctoral scholars linked to two different international projects.

Research spans learning outcomes and learning gains, teachers' mathematical knowledge and classroom practices, teacher development, and the broader curricular and policy contexts of teachers' work. Prof Pierangelo Rosati
Biography
Prof Pierangelo Rosati is Professor in Management at DCU Business School, where he leads postgraduate applied consultancy projects focused on digital business and analytics. He is also a Funded Investigator at LERO, the SFI Research Centre for Software. He holds a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Chieti-Pescara and an MSc from the University of Bologna, and has held visiting positions in Mexico, the UK, Italy, Portugal and Australia.

Research examines the business value and societal implications of digital technologies, with emphasis on data analytics, cybersecurity, digital sustainability, technology acceptance, and the digital transformation of towns and cities.

Dr Damien Dupré
Biography
Dr Damien Dupré holds a PhD in Social and Experimental Psychology from the University Grenoble-Alpes, France. He helped develop the DynEmo database by recording and analysing dynamic, spontaneous facial expressions of emotion. He worked at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at UCD, processing physiological data from marathon runners to understand stress and effort in endurance contexts. He is currently Assistant Professor of Business Research Methods at DCU.
Research Expertise
Specialises in multivariate time series analysis and trend extraction, applying these techniques to supervised and unsupervised machine learning classification tasks. Research centres on psycho-physiological responses in real-world settings.

Biography
Dr Vincent Tawiah is an Associate Professor in Accounting at DCU Business School. He holds a PhD in Accounting from Griffith University, Australia. He is recognised as a Top 2% Scientist worldwide. Dr Tawiah has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals and has secured over €200,000 in competitive research funding from Horizon Europe and Research Ireland.

Prof Edgar Morgenroth
Biography
Prof Edgar Morgenroth is a full Professor of Economics at DCU Business School. He is a member of the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC), the External Advisory Board of the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service (IGEES), and a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. He has served two terms as an independent member of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC).
