Research and Enterprise Priority Areas

DCU research creates new knowledge and technologies to enhance capabilities in the following key thematic areas. These areas are supported by the business development team in DCU Invent who can introduce relevant DCU technologies and expertise to enterprises, and help enterprises connect with appropriate experts within DCU.  

 Health technologies and the healthy society

The Health Technologies and the Healthy and Ageing Society priority area focuses on developing and implementing technologies to address the challenges of an ageing society. The Health Technologies area brings together research from multiple disciplines in DCU. In particular, it can integrate biomedical research with technology and social sciences to provide innovative solutions to problems in many areas: Smart pharma: innovations to address challenges in the biopharmaceutical industry; Pre-clinical discovery: a multi-disease approach to investigating mechanism underpinning chronic disease; Translating biomedical research into practical application: unique capability in sensor-based devices; Connected health: an integrated approach to improving life for patients through healthcare innovations.

The Information Technology and the Digital Society priority area helps to transfer DCU’s ICT-based research outputs into the digital economy, and provides access to expertise within DCU that is available for consultancy, and for collaborative or contract research. Available expertise covers: semiconductor manufacturing, data analytics, cloud computing, intelligent content. This area brings together multi-disciplinary teams of researchers capable of addressing significant challenges to generate innovative solutions. We have vast experience in collaborations with national and international academic and industry partners, as well as in direct contract research with enterprises from SMEs to global corporations.

 Democratic and secure societies

Contemporary societies face major challenges around the inter-linked aims of democracy and security. DCU brings considerable expertise in the most important aspects of these challenges, in particular in conflict resolution and post-conflict peacebuildingthe relationship between media and democracy, the importance of translation and inter-culturalism in contemporary society, the role of education as a driver of social change and inclusion.

In these areas, DCU has led national and internationally funded research projects for research councils, the EU, policy-makers and NGOs. We are committed to working with policy communities, civil society and enterprises when our expertise can be useful.
