DCU Researchers awarded research funding and industry partnerships and placements in Research Ireland scheme

The Enterprise Fellowship Scheme is a co-funded programme enables researchers to gain experience beyond academic settings through defined research collaborations, while providing enterprise partners such as AstraZeneca with access to academic knowledge and skills relevant to their interests.

The programme is delivered in two streams: a Partnership stream, and a Placement stream. Each stream is designed to support different modes of research in collaboration with enterprise partners.

The partnership stream supports researchers to undertake full-time research in an eligible research body while working in close partnership with enterprise. The University was awarded three awards in this stream.

Dr Arnau Cuy Saqués from the School of Biotechnology will work with Clinical Cancer Research Trust on the project 'Determining the functional roles of novel regulatory non-coding mutations on pathogenicity and drug response in breast cancer.' Dr Saqués previously completed his PhD with Prof Andrew Kellet's group.

Dr Diego Armando Acevedo Guzman from the School of Chemical Sciences will work with Breakthrough Cancer Research on the project 'Light activation of carbon dots for photodynamic therapy and drug release in pancreatic cancer.'

Dr Shane Murphy from the School of Communications will work with Men's Development Network Ltd on the project 'MASC UP: Engaging Boys in Tackling the Impact of Masculinity Influencers on Attitudes to Sexual and Gender Based Violence.' Within DCU FuJo, Dr Murphy has worked on projects relating to media ownership, media literacy, and trade union communications. In 2023, He completed his PhD at Dublin City University.

Two further DCU researchers were awarded funding under the placement stream, which enables researchers to pursue research on placement with enterprise partners worldwide.

Dr Ahmed Galib Reza from the School of Electronic Engineering has secured a placement with MBryonics on which he will investigate high speed optical communications for satellite links. Dr Reza is a research fellow in the Radio and Optical Communications Laboratory led by Prof Liam Barry.

Dr Grace Colley from the School of Biotechnology will be based at AstraZeneca, working on a project entitled 'Identification and Prioritisation of Digital Biomarkers as Companion Diagnostics in AstraZeneca’s Key Oncology Therapy Areas.' Dr Colley previously completed her PhD at DCU, supervised by Dr Alex Eustace.
