Caring for Children with Inherited Metabolic Disorder - NUR1228

Who should apply?

Registered nurses and Allied Health and Social Care Professional (AHSCP) caring for children and young people with an Inherited Metabolic Disorder (IMD) 

Module aim

This module is designed to increase theoretical knowledge base of nurses and allied health and social care professionals to provide care for children and young people with an Inherited Metabolic Disorder in both acute and community settings.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module and following a period of personal study, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate evidence based management of children, young people with an Inherited Metabolic Disorder and their families in the healthcare and community setting.
  • Critically examine the pathophysiological process associated with Inherited Metabolic Disorders.
  • Explore the application of the pharmacological and dietary support and its’ delivery systems as utilised in the treatment of Inherited Metabolic Disorders in childhood.
  • Critically review the social, economic, psychological and emotional impact on the child young person and their family of chronic illness and the importance of family centred care in meeting the holistic needs of each child and their family
  • Evaluate the role of registered nurse and ASCHPs working in the field of Inherited Metabolic Disorders in meeting the health promotion and education needs of the child/young person with an Inherited Metabolic disorder and their family along the life continuum

The module will run in association with DCU, dates are as follows:

  • Day 1: September 8 – In person

  • Day 2 September 9 – In person

  • Day 3: September 22 - Remote

  • Day 4: September 23 – Remote

  • Day 5: October 7 - In person

  • Day 6: October 20 – In person

  • Day 7: November 3 – Remote poster presentation

Credit/Level: Level 8, 5 ECTS Credits
