Year commenced: 2013

Anticipated year of completion: 2015

Research summary

It has been widely reported that people with an ID are less physically active and live more sedentary lives than the general population. The current study looks to determine the impact of Special Olympics participation on the physical activity levels of people with an ID across the island of Ireland. Participants were recruited from 5 ID services across the North, South, East and West of Ireland. People who do and do not take part in SOI programmes were invited to take part. This research will allow us to determine the health benefits of participation in SOI programmes for people with an ID and will offer a platform for advocating greater participation in this organisation.
