Research Title: The effects of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on high-intensity intermittent exercise, recovery from exercise and subsequent performance in rugby union players.

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is a buffer which occurs naturally in the body. NaHCO3 purportedly has the capacity to delay acute fatigue caused by metabolic acidosis by creating a state of pre-exercise alkalosis within the body, thereby effectively regulating acid-base balance and pH levels. NaHCO3 ingestion has been shown to improve performance in high intensity exercise of 1-7 minutes duration. However little is known regarding the effect of NaHCO3 on repeated sprint-ability comparable to the type of movement and intensity necessary in the performance of team sports such as rugby union. The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of acute and chronic NaHCO3 supplementation on performance, recovery from exercise and subsequent performance of high intensity intermittent exercise indicative of that which is required in team sports, rugby union in particular.
