Research Title: Effect of Resistance Training and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Arthroscopically Confirmed Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic disability in people over the age of 50. NMES is the application of electrical current to elicit involuntary muscle contractions and may be used as an adjunct to traditional exercises in the first-line management of this condition. Dr. Brans's study compares the effects of 6-week home-based resistance training and NMES program on self-reported disability, pain, functional capacity, quadriceps strength and cross-sectional area in older persons with moderate to severe knee OA. Effects at muscle fibre level are examined by measuring changes in expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms and two ubiquitin-protein ligases implicated in quadriceps atrophy, muscle atrophy F-box and muscle RING finger-1.
