Research Title: Physiological Health and Performance of Irish Horse Racing Jockeys

Despite the international popularity of the sport of horse racing, there is very limited information available relating to the specific lifestyle and performance challenges facing jockeys in preparation for racing. On behalf of the Irish Turf Club, we are currently conducting an extensive study into jockeys detailing the physical demands placed on a jockey, the effects of habitual dehydration experienced by a large proportion of jockeys and the weight bearing nature of the sport of horse racing to isolate the key causes of the reported inadequate bone mineral density in jockeys. By increasing our understanding of these critical issues, it will be possible to put in place strategies, both nutritional and training, to assist each jockey in enhancing their health, wellbeing and overall performance throughout their sporting career, and beyond.
