Research Title: The Effect of Prehabilitation on the Outcome of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a phenomenon common to the active, sporting individual. There is an increasing pressure for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients to return to high-demand sports within 6 months. Quadriceps muscle strength is a significant determinant to functional ability post-ACLR. Dr. Shaarani's study examines the effect of a 6 week supervised exercise programme on preoperative and postoperative (3 month) quadriceps size and strength, knee pain, and functional capacity in individuals undergoing ACLR. Muscle biopsies samples are also analysed for genes that regulate muscle hypertrophy and atrophy.
