Research Title: Feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of a career transition programme to increase career adaptability and psychological well-being in elite Irish athletes

Year commenced: 2014

Anticipated year of completion:2018

Supervisor: Dr. Siobhain McArdle

Research Summary

The Irish Institute of Sport has identified a priority need to provide elite athletes with greater individual and system support around career transition and mental health. The aim of this project is to develop and test an innovative athlete support programme that will enhance Irish Olympic and Paralympic athletes’ ability to successfully negotiate major career transitions.  As part of the research process, the project will explore gender issues relevant to the development of the intervention programme. The outcomes of this study will improve current support networks around elite Irish athletes and inform policies related to improving athlete support systems and mental health.

The Irish Research Council’s Enterprise Partnership along with the Irish Institute of Sport and Sport Ireland has enabled this project.
