Development of National Exercise Referral Framework (NERF)

The School of Health and Human Performance has been commissioned by the Health Service Executive to develop a new National Exercise Referral Framework (NERF). Physical activity has both disease prevention and health promoting properties. The integration of physical activity and non-communicable disease prevention into primary care systems is globally recognised as one of the 'best investments' for physical activity. Exercise referral is one physical activity pathway that exists in the healthcare setting.
The development of the NERF has involved:
  • a review of literature,
  • learnings of the previous GP exercise referral programme,
  • an expert symposium,
  • consultation with an expert panel, and
  • consultation with an advisory panel of representatives from both the health and non-health sectors necessary for the implementation of the NERF.
The NERF is currently at Draft 2 stage, which is open for public consultation. All feedback is welcome. Information, Draft 2, and the feedback form are available from  Public consultation close on Monday November 10th. Have your say!
