Biography

Benő Csapó is a Professor of Education (1997-) at the University of Szeged, the head of the Doctoral School of Education (2003-), the Research Group on the Development of Competencies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2002), and the Center for Research on Learning and Instruction he founded in 2003.

He was a Humboldt research fellow at the University of Bremen (1989), and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California (1994-95). He has been participating in several international research projects. He was the principal investigator in Hungary in The background of mathematical achievements (Center for Human Growth and Development, University of Michigan, 1990-1991), a participant in the Developing democratic character program (Institute for Educational Inquiry, University of Washington, 1997-99) projects. He was a member of the Expert Group that devised the framework for the assessment of Problem Solving within the 2003 OECD PISA survey, and he was the leader of the Technological Issues Working Group in the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills initiative (2009-2010). At present, he is an external expert of the Kompetenzmodelle zur Erfassung individueller Lernergebnisse und zur Bilanzierung von Bildungsprozessen program (Germany, 2007-2013).

He was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of University of Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (2007-09) and at present he is a member of the PISA Governing Board (2005-,vice chair: 2008-2014).
He is a member (vice chair: 2002-2005) of the Educational Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1990. He is the Editor of Magyar Pedagógia (1990-). As a chair of the scientific program committee, he played a leading role in the organization of the 1st National Conference on Educational Research . He is a member of the editorial board of
Learning and Instruction , International Journal of Educational Research, Educational Research Review, Thinking Skills and Creativity, and the Cambridge Journal of Education, Educational Assessment, Journal of Education for Teaching and Technology, Knowledge and Learning.


He is a member of several international research associations. He was twice an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (1997-2001). He was the president of the 12th Biennial Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction(Budapest, 2007).
