My work is focused on maternal, newborn and child health and rights and in particular enabling mothers to breastfeed through social and policy supports. I am a qualified nurse and midwife and then undertook a Social Science (Social Policy, Library/ Library & Information Studies) degree at UCD and then a Masters in Social Policy at the London School of Economics. I then worked in UCD Social Policy as a Teaching Fellow. I was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Research of the University of Malawi, on a volunteer (APSO) programme for two years. I came to DCU in 2001 to take up a research job and undertook my PhD there examining power and empowerment for midwives in Ireland. I love teaching on our BSc Health & Society degree, where I teach about scarcity and health, marginalisation and health, campaigning for health equity and challenging global health problems. I am involved in research and teaching in Malawi and South Africa. I am a member of the Board of the Irish Form for Global Health since 2015 and Chairperson since July 2017.
