I became an academic later in my career and was a practicing nurse for twenty years. I have a PhD in Computer Science and have also completed an MEd in Education and Training Management and an MSc in Health Informatics. I am the vice chair of the National Standards Authority of Ireland Health Informatics Standards Consortium (NSAI HISC) and Director of the Center for eIntegrated Care (CeIC) in the Faculty of Science and Health. I regularly attend ISO and CEN meetings with a particular focus on standards relating to concepts and terminology as well as the Electronic Healthcare Record. My current research activity includes acting as an advisor to different agencies on topics relating to semantic and syntactic interoperability. In 2016 I became the Director of the DCU SNHS ICNP User Group an accredited research center for the International Classification for Nursing Practice in Ireland. I am currently PI on HSE public services contract for concepts standards and information modelling, I also participate in a number of projects with Enterprise Ireland, Adapt and Insigtht Research Centers . My teaching interests include; Health Informatics Concepts and Terminology Adoption and use of technology enhanced learning resources in undergraduate and post graduate education, Self Managment Support and IoT adoption in the community setting.
