Biographical Details

I became an academic later in my career and was a practicing nurse for twenty years. I have a PhD in Computer Science and have also completed an MEd in Education and Training Management and an MSc in Health Informatics. Currently I am chair of the National Standards Authority of Ireland Health Informatics Standards Consortium (NSAI HISC) and Director of the Center for eIntegrated Care (CeIC) in the Faculty of Science and Health. I am also a funded investigator with Adapt Research Center. My current research activity includes acting as an advisor to different agencies on topics relating to semantic and syntactic interoperability. Since 2016 I am  the Director of the DCU SNHS ICNP User Group an accredited research center for the International Classification for Nursing Practice in Ireland. I recently completed a three year HSE public services contract for concepts standards and information modelling for the national health and social care data dictionary. Currently I am involved in a number of projects with Enterprise Ireland, Adapt and Insigtht Research Centers on uptake and use of digital IoT and self management support care delivery . My teaching interests include; health informatics, health promotion,  semantic interoperability  and use of technology enhanced learning resources in undergraduate and post graduate education,  I am currently engaged in supervision of three PhD students and a research fellow under the Marie Curie EliteS standards fellowship. I am also lead editor on the 5th edition of An Introduction to Nursing Informatics which will be published in quarter 4 of 2020 under the Springer Health Informatics Series.
