Message from Claire
Dear Students,
I'm sure you have noticed that the days are getting that bit shorter and the mornings that bit darker, so that must mean that we are well into Semester One! Assignments will begin to roll in now, so keep your files in good order so that you can make sense of your notes when you go to look through them!
Any questions, please just get in touch at student.support@dcu.ie
Enjoy the week!
Claire,
Dr. Claire Bohan, Dean of Students
Focus this week
Skills Development
This week, let's talk balance!
Demands on your time are probably increasing as you get busy with assignments, presentations, group projects, and everything else you may have going on in your life outside of university. This may be a good time to pause, reflect, and put some strategies in place.
Your Wheel of Life on Develop is a coaching tool to help you identify areas where you want to achieve greater balance. Not sure where to start making changes? You can email student.support@dcu.ie to make an individual coaching appointment, or keep an eye out for the next iteration of our Pathways to Success series of workshops.
Discover Self-Management is an online resource which reviews strategies to increase motivation, organise and plan your time, beat procrastination, and manage your stress. This is a great time in the semester to engage with it before things get too hectic!
From Challenges to Strengths
As your studies become increasingly challenging, you may sometimes find yourself losing confidence in your abilities. To help you refocus on your strengths and build your resilience, why not try this audio exercise developed by our Counselling and Personal Development Service? It takes approximately 20 minutes and you will need to have a notebook handy.
Health & Wellbeing
World Mental Health Day
This week, on October 10th, we mark World Mental Health Day. This is a global initiative to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and encourage action to support mental well-being and access to care for all.
This year the focus is on the mental health impact of repeated exposure to news coverage of crises and conflicts. The world is going through a tough time right now and, even if you're not directly affected by events, it can still feel like a lot to cope with.
We may not have the power to influence or change everything we’d like to on a global scale, but there are things we can do to protect ourselves, and others, from feeling overwhelmed and hopeless in the face of current events. You can read tips on how to manage your news consumption and the impacts of doomscrolling.
Check in with yourself this World Mental Health Day and ask yourself how you're doing. If you need supports, DCU is here and can help. Visit our website for more information.

DCU welcomes the Elephant in the Room initiative
Ahead of World Mental Health Day 2025, the Elephant in the Room emphasises our commitment to fostering a campus culture where mental health is openly acknowledged, supported, and prioritised. We recognise that mental health challenges are a reality for many, yet stigma often prevents open conversations.
The Elephant in the Room is about changing this – encouraging understanding, reducing stigma, and ensuring that all members of our university community feel supported in their wellbeing journey.
Jia, our Elephant in the Room sculpture, will be displayed across our three teaching campuses:
-
O’Reilly Library Atrium, Glasnevin Campus: 6th - 10th October 2025
-
Main Restaurant, All Hallows Campus: 13th - 17th October 2025
-
Cregan Library, St. Patrick’s Campus: 20th - 24th October 2025
Visit Jia and engage with the Elephant Pledge Wall!
This is a space to show your commitment to breaking the stigma around mental health. Whether it’s a message of support, a personal pledge to prioritise wellbeing, or a reminder that no one is alone, your words can help create a culture of openness and understanding. Visit Jia and add your voice to the conversation!
