To enable Universities to continue the journey towards climate neutrality, National Climate Action Plans set out mandated actions and targets. Current public sector emission reduction targets are focused on energy related emissions and include:
- 51% reduction in energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030
- 50% energy efficiency by 2030
- Climate neutrality by 2050
Details of our actions towards these goals can be found in the DCU Climate Action Roadmap.
The DCU Estates Energy Team has a long track record of delivering on our energy targets set under the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021.
The DCU Estates Team in tandem with the DCU Green Committee carry out ongoing projects to raise awareness and promote behavioural change relating to sustainable use of energy across our campuses.
Energy Management
DCU is committed to reducing energy consumption and improving efficiency. In conjunction with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) several projects have been implemented to reach these targets.
Sustainable Energy Community (SEC)
DCU Sustainability Office established a Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) which run workshops that aim to inform and engage with homeowners within the community regarding reducing home energy consumption, and the supports available via SEAI to assist in making the necessary changes.
A Home Energy Kit is available at the Sustainability Office for staff and students to assess energy use in their home. This scheme will expand to serve the local communities surrounding DCU.
DCU's Climate Action Roadmap (CAR) 2025 accounts the specific measures and actions being undertaken by DCU to mee its obligations under the Climate Action legislation and mandates under the Nation Climate Action Plan.
CAR 2025 combines inputs from across the University including the Estates Team, Sustainability Office and Executive working group.
